Playpens present potential strangulation hazard

OTTAWA - Health Canada today warned Canadians about potentially dangerous playpens. These playpens may pose an entanglement hazard that can lead to strangulation when pacifier strings or loose clothing worn by children become caught on protruding rivets, nuts or bolts on the outer edge of the playpen's top rail (Appendix I).

Health Canada reiterates to all parents and caregivers to never place, tie or attach cords, strings and/or ropes around a child's neck.

On November 25, Health Canada issued an advisory to parents and caregivers as a precautionary measure following the announcement of a major recall of playpens in the United States. Health Canada is now aware that some of the affected playpens were or may have been sold in Canada and that the refunds or repair kits offered apply to Canada. See Appendix II for a list of potentially hazardous playpens targetted by the US recall. This recall applies only to the specific models identified on the list. Based on the information available to Health Canada, most of the playpens targeted by this recall are older models not currently on the market. Health Canada's investigation is still on-going.

Regardless of the product they own, consumers should examine the upper edge of the playpen's top rail for any protrusions such as metal rivets, plastic knobs, bolts, or small components which extend more than 0.6 centimetres (1/4 inch). If protrusions are found, they should discontinue use of the playpen immediately.

For additional information concerning this voluntary recall and the remedies being offered by some of the companies listed in Appendix I, please contact Health Canada's toll free line, open from Monday to Friday, at 1-888-774-1111. Prior to calling, consumers should have the playpen brand name, model number and date of manufacture ready.
