Visiting Fellowships Program (NSERC)

The Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories Program gives promising young scientists and engineers the chance to work in Canadian government laboratories and research institutions.

A number of government departments and agencies, including Health Canada, participate in this program. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is responsible for administering the program.

Fellowships of around $44,000 each are awarded for one year. The department involved can then choose to renew the fellowship for a second and third year.

Qualifications and Applications

To qualify, you must have received a doctoral degree in the natural sciences or engineering from a recognized university within the past five years.

There are no deadlines for application to this program. Applications are processed and reviewed as they are received, and decisions are announced up to three months after applications are received.

Health Canada Participation

More than 20 different Health Canada laboratories take part in the Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories Program. These include the state-of-the-art Next link will open in a new window National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, the Product Safety Laboratory in Ottawa, and the Health Protection and Food Branch laboratories, to name just a few.
