Del Surjik, former artistic director of Pi Theatre in Vancouver, has been named the new artistic director of Saskatoon's Persephone Theatre.
Surjik, born in North Battleford, Sask., and a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, is taking over as the theatre awaits the opening of its new building.
Former artistic director Tibor Feheregyhazi died in July after a battle with prostate cancer.
One of Feheregyhazi's main achievements was the construction of a new building specifically for the theatre, but he didn't live to see it open.
Persephone's first show in the new venue, Beauty and the Beast, opens Dec. 12.
Surjik told CBC News he'll build on the legacy Feheregyhazi left.
Surjik was a founding member of Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan and the Saskatoon Soaps acting troupe.
He moved to Vancouver in 1989 and became artistic director of Pi, an independent theatre in Vancouver, 10 years ago.
He's been a guest director at Persephone, on the James O'Shea play Dogbarked.
The Saskatoon theatre company had 35 applicants for the position.
