NDP MP's election expenses investigated

The 2006 election expenses of New Brunswick MP Yvon Godin are being investigated by Elections Canada.

Godin, the representative for Acadie-Bathurst, said he was informed last week that a complaint had been registered with Elections Canada regarding his 2006 re-election campaign expenses.

The commissioner of Elections Canada will not confirm or deny that a complaint has been received or that an investigation is underway, said spokesman John Enright.

Godin said he has not been told who registered the complaint or what it is regarding.

Elections Canada has not yet asked to speak with him, but his campaign organizer has been interviewed, he said.

"[The investigator] wanted to verify all the books and what happened in the election of 2006," said Godin. "My agent asked him what it was about and he couldn't tell him about it."

Godin said his office has handed over any requested documents to Elections Canada.

The NDP member of Parliament has been serving in the northern New Brunswick riding since 1997.
