Trends in Contemporary Canadian Video Art
Twentieth-century video art is rooted in 19th-century science. It was the discovery
of the cathode ray tube and the electron in 1897 which provided the basis for
the electronic reproduction and transmission of images. By 1951 it was possible
to record images as well as sounds on magnetic tape (the Ampex 2´ tape).
As early as 1963 Nam June Paik used television sets as elements of an installation,
thus signalling the importance of television as symbol and as a means of shaping
