Trade with Canada

Europe remains, after the United States, Canada’s most important trading partner. Europe is characterized by an economic partnership among the 27 member state European Union, the European Free Trade Association and individual countries. This region, with a growing population and increasing Gross Domestic Product, offers endless possibilities for Canadian commercial growth.

In 2006 alone, Canada’s two-way trade relationship with Europe totalled $90.6 billion, a significant increase from $66.0 billion in 2002. Some notable increases in our exports have occurred in high value-added sectors of the Canadian economy including information and communications technology, life sciences, and aerospace and transportation industries.

In 2005, European Foreign Direct Investment in Canada showcased growth, amounting to $119.4 billion from $103.6 billion in 2002. This investment is vital to extend the international "reach" of our companies into the global economy (including the NAFTA market) and to enhance the managerial, marketing and technological capabilities of our firms. In the same year, Canadian direct investment in Europe equalled $118.8 billion, also an increase from $109.1 billion in 2002.
