Transport Canada's Environmental Protection program focuses on ensuring the department's compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations and policies. For information on the framework used within the department to track and improve its environmental performance, and recent progress reports, see the Environmental Management System.

Another important objective of Transport Canada's Environmental Protection program is to reduce the environmental impact of employee activities such as workplace commuting and business travel. In 2000, Environmental Affairs launched a  "Green Commute" program, to change the commuting habits of Transport Canada's own employees in the National Capital Region. The scope of the program has since been broadened, to assist other employers in improving the commuting options available to their employees.  

Environmental Affairs also works with other transportation stakeholders to develop environmental protection practices and standards for the transportation sector. Examples include:
 De-icing of an aircraft

  • working with airports and airlines to minimize the environmental effects of de-icing fluids;

  • working with Environment Canada and industry stakeholders to find ways to manage road salts so that harm to the environment is reduced; and
