The CHN was created to provide you with a source for the most up-to-date and
trustworthy Canadian health information. All of the information and resources
you will find have gone through a rigorous selection and quality assurance procedure.
When you search or browse the CHN for information on the health issues that
interest you, you are accessing the resources of over 1000 leading Canadian
organizations. These Network Contributors include federal, provincial and territorial
governments, hospitals, libraries, universities, non-government and community-based
organizations.
Your search results are presented in the form of links to the resources on
the CHN Network Contributors' Web sites. You can quickly browse the titles and
short descriptions of the resources, and click on them to go directly to the
ones that interest you.
The information currently available through the CHN exceeds 17,000 documents
on the Internet, in English and French. Our emphasis is on health promotion
and injury and disease prevention, although we do offer information on specific
diseases and conditions. We also provide access to some non-Web-based services,
such as phone lines and newsletters. The CHN also has answers to nearly 600
Frequently Asked Questions on a wide range of health issues.
The CHN is growing every day, as more documents and features are added to the
site. See About Us for more details on how we have built and continue to build
our collection of resources.

Searching in French and English
All of the content on the CHN Web site, and many of our Network Contributors'
resources, are available in both French and English. However, some items provided
by this latter group are only available in one language.
The information available through the CHN is catalogued separately according
to language. Consequently, if you start a search from one of our English pages,
only those resources available in English will appear in the results. The same
principle applies when you start a search from a French page. Therefore, if
you are searching for information on a topic and wish to get all possible search
results in both languages, you will have to perform two searches, one from an
English search page and one from a French search page.

There are three different ways to search CHN for health information:
- Guided Search: To browse or be guided to resources, start at the CHN
Home Page and select a CHN Group/Topic page that interests you. The Group/Topic
page will appear on your screen. Then, click the link to Guided Search. You
can explore all the resources in that Group/Topic page, or narrow down your
search by choosing from the options presented. See Guided Search Tips for more
details.
- A-Z subject term search: Pick specific health topics from
our A to Z list.
- Keyword search: For advanced searchers who want to
type their own search, with various options. See Keyword Search Options for
more details.
Searches return a list of resource descriptions that include:
- resource titles, linked to the resources on the Internet;
- brief summaries, to help you decide if the resources meet your needs;
- the names of the CHN network contributor responsible for the resources, and
links to these organizations' home pages if available on the Internet;
- the names of collections of resources that items in the list belong to, linked
to collections' home pages if available.
