Canadian students explore space in Hyderabad

The next generation of space explorers from Canada, the U.S., and Europe joined undergraduate and graduate students from India at the 58th Congress of the International Astronautical Federation in Hyderabad.

The Canadian Space Agency's Space Learning Program supported the 19 Canadian students who presented their research. They were exposed to world-class science and technology while expanding their respective professional networks.

There was complimentary student programming to enhance their learning experience -- the result of collaboration between the members of the International Space Education Board from the space agencies of Canada, the U.S., Europe, Japan, and France.

The Canadian student delegation attended an intense speaker training session. The CSA's Space Learning Program staff engaged them in learning presentation techniques. The workshop provided highlights from training sessions currently offered to CSA scientists and engineers annually who participate in the CSA's Space Learning Program as workshop hosts.

Students engaged in a discussion session with Canadian Space Agency president, Mr. Larry Boisvert who spoke with great candour about the future of the Canadian Space Agency, CSA policy and operations, human space exploration, international collaboration, and opportunities within the Canadian Space Program for up-and-coming professionals.

The Canadian Student Breakfast, held mid-week, was a huge success. Senior CSA managers, and space industry leaders from COM DEV, MDA, and Neptec were introduced to some of Canada's finest engineers, scientists, and researchers of the near future. In small group discussions, they shared insight on the direction of our national space program and advice on the role students could play in its evolution.

The week wrapped up with students learning about Canadian space science and exploration plans, opportunities and challenges from Dr. Dave Kendall, CSA Director General of Space Science and Exploration. The excitement in the room was palpable as Canadian students studying abroad became aware of the opportunities awaiting them in Canada -- many in areas of most interest to them.

Dr. Kendall encouraged them to glimpse at the future and, as one student from the University of Michigan said, "I've always wanted to come back to Canada and I'm so excited because now I can work in an area that inspires me!"
