Where can I get more information about mental health and mental illness?


Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA)

The CMHA's mission is to promote the mental health of all people and has offices in communities of all sizes across Canada. CMHA offers mental health-related information services, workshops, seminars, and other support services. For more information on CMHA support and information services in your area, please contact your local branch of CMHA. Location and contact information for all of CMHA's branches across Canada is available online.

The CMHA National Office has created a series of 24 easy-to-read pamphlets in English and French that contain information on mental health and mental illness that are also available online.

Centre for Suicide Prevention (CSP)

CSP is the largest English-language suicide information resource centre and library in the world. CSP does not offer counselling or crisis services, but its web site is a good source of suicide and mental health information, including booklists and book reviews. It also provides a listing of crisis centres across Canada. CSPs newsletter, SIEC Alert, reviews current research around suicide and mental health topics, such as suicide clusters or the link between depression and suicide.

Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT)

CANMAT works to improve the quality of life of people who have mood and anxiety disorders through research, education, public awareness, and policy development. The web site offers consumer information on anxiety, depression, and bipolar affective disorder, including their symptoms and treatment.

The Schizophrenia Society of Canada

The SSC website provides information on schizophrenia and support to people with schizophrenia, their families and caregivers. The site also provides contact information for provincial and local chapters across Canada.

Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC)

The MDSC works nationally to ensure that issues related to mood disorders are understood and considered in the setting of research priorities, the development of treatment strategies, and the creation of government programs and policies. The web site offers access to resources such as publications, links, and a chat line.

The NNMH advocates, educates, and provides expertise and resources for the increased health and well-being of Canadian mental health consumers and survivors, their friends and their families.
