Part 1: Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector



Schedule for Implementation:

Part 1 of the Act will come into force on January 1, 2001 and will be implemented in two stages:

  • on January 1, 2001, Part 1 will apply to every organization which operates as a federal work, undertaking or business (including the employee information of the organization) or which discloses personal information outside a province for consideration (where the personal information itself is the subject of the trade). There is one exception to this timetable. Part 1 will apply to organizations, insofar as they deal with personal health information, starting on January 1, 2002.

  • on January 1, 2004, Part 1 will apply to every organization that collects, uses or discloses personal information in the course of commercial activities.
