The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) is a marketing agency for western Canadian wheat and barley growers. Working at the CWB

The CWB is an integral part of agriculture on the Prairies and conducts business in over 70 countries around the world. In order to work and compete in a global environment, the CWB employs people with diverse skill sets, different ethnic backgrounds and a wide range of linguistic abilities.

Technology and the CWB
The CWB has a progressive information technology environment combining various platforms, Internet and commercially acquired technologies. Technology tools are utilized in almost every major business application of the CWB, from sophisticated satellite remote sensing systems for weather and crop data, to electronic information transmissions from the country to head office, to e-commerce opportunities.

Employees have access to modern computer technology, including an employee Intranet service which provides easy access and information on policies, benefits, employee communications and industry news.

Operational and services areas at the CWB

Information & Technology employs an enterprise-wide technical architecture encompassing the management of client desktop tools, technical and connectivity components, knowledge management and business intelligence systems, contracts and strategic alliances and strategies for sourcing supplies and services, and leveraging value-added opportunities for the CWB and its shareholders.

Farmer Relations & Public Affairs formulates and implements communication programs for the CWB. Many activities are intended for farmers or the news media, but some are also directed at grain customers, the federal government, the grain industry and the general public.

Strategic Planning & Policy provides policy analysis and represents the CWB at industry and government levels. This group specializes in international trade agreements, transportation issues, government and agricultural policies and price forecasting.

Corporate Secretary Office and Legal provides guidance and support to the Board of Directors and handles all legal affairs that affect CWB operations such as trade law, financing, demurrage claims and contract disputes. They also ensure the proper application of the CWB Act and the Agricultural Marketing Programs Act.

Farmer Operations provides programs and service to help western Canadian farmers to price and deliver their grain. This area administers CWB delivery contracts which enable farmers to commit grain for delivery, establishes delivery calls to bring grain into the handling system to meet sales and directs the logistical planning necessary to move grain to customers in Canada and at port. Farmer Operations closely monitors Prairie grain supplies to coordinate this inventory with capacity at Canada's export ports and in the handling and transportation system. Farmer Operations also issues payments to farmers and administers cash advances for wheat, durum and barley grown in Western Canada on behalf of the Government of Canada.

Finance is the centre of the CWB's financial operations and maintains all accounting records, accounts receivables/payables, payments of CWB obligations, borrowing requirements and financial risk management. It also calculates the return to farmers in each pool account. Finance is comprised of Treasury Operations, Accounting, Export Finance, and Inventory. As well, Risk Control and Reporting performs independent financial risk control and Treasury Operations manages a Cdn$6-7 billion debt portfolio including foreign exchange hedging, cash forecasting and interest rate exposure.

Human Resources is responsible for the management of human resources to enable the CWB to achieve its business objectives. It also develops and administers policies and programs in the areas of compensation and benefits, performance evaluations, recruitment and selection, training and development, wellness, employee relations and various legislative programs.

Corporate Audit is responsible for the assessment of operating, accounting and management procedures at the CWB and recommending changes to management where internal control, efficiency, effectiveness or economy could be improved. This area monitors and tests transactions for compliance with the CWB Act, regulations, board orders and policy.

The Library provides specialized information services to CWB staff and external users. This department has a wide-ranging collection of agricultural and economic information with a special emphasis on the grain trade.

Market Analysis monitors, analyzes and reports on all factors affecting the production, consumption and trade of grain in different geographical regions of the world. This department's primary role is to assist the Sales area in sales decision-making and execution.

Product Development & Marketing Support is responsible for encouraging the development of products which suit customer needs on a long-term basis. This includes product market testing and developing customer acceptance, as well as facilitating technical education and support in cooperation with the Canadian Grain Commission and the Canadian International Grains Institute.

Farmer Relations is responsible for establishing and supporting key relationships with producers and the agri-business industry. Grain marketing partnerships with producers, as well as addressing producer needs and concerns, are primary objectives.

Commodity Risk Management is responsible for managing commodity price risk through the use of exchange-traded futures and options, as well as other risk management instruments. This group also works closely with the Sales area in developing the overall marketing strategy.

The Sales area is in constant contact with customers around the world as well as accredited exporters authorized to sell on the CWB's behalf. This area promotes sales, devises sales strategy, negotiates sales contracts, follows up on completed contracts and arranges after-sales service. Worldwide grain supplies, competitor prices, export subsidies, ocean freight rates, foreign exchange and customer quality requirements are continually monitored.

Weather and Crop Surveillance monitors weather and crop conditions for various crops grown around the world. Daily weather information from over 3,000 stations and global satellite images provide information to assess crop health and yield potential in major grain-growing regions. This information is used to support strategic sales planning.
