Integration and Assembly Areas

David Florida Laboratory

The integration and assembly areas of the David Florida Laboratory (DFL) are situated within three temperature- and humidity-controlled, high-bay clean rooms. High Bay 3, the largest,  is 1,080 square metres (11,600 square feet). When required, Class 10,000 or better clean room conditions can readily be made available. Each of the high bays are independently traversed by three travelling bridge cranes; hook heights are 9, 11, and 16 m (30, 36, and 52 ft.), respectively.

Access to the high bays is via security-controlled, air showers for personnel. A large loading bay (117 square metres / 1,280 square feet) with an overhead crane and ramp serves as the access point for all equipment entering the DFL. Two adjacent freight elevators provide access to the basement-level workshop and storage areas.

Power supplies and generators

  • Three frequency inverters, 50 Hz, 3-phase, 4-wire, 380/220 V
Note: Two inverters supplying 25 kW can be operated simultaneously

Emergency power supplies and generators

  • Main diesel generator: 1.5 MW plant serves all DFL and storage building #87
  • Backup diesel generator: 350 kW.
Note: This generator is a backup to the 1.5 MW plant and dedicated to essential building services, the Thermal Qualification Facilities, and the Structural Qualification Facilities.

Uninterruptible power supply

  • In the event of power failures of commercial hydro as well as the main and secondary backups , a 15 kVA uninterruptible power supply can supply power for up to two hours for hardware in the Thermal Qualification Facilities, computers in the Structural Qualification Facilities, and other mission-critical support hardware.

Associated Customer Support Facilities

Accommodations

  • Adjacent offices provide excellent work areas for our clients

Meetings and conference facilities

  • Two conference rooms hold 12 to 80 people
  • Meeting rooms for 10 to 20 people
  • Other meeting areas are available throughout the CRC campus

Environmental controls

  • Offices within the DFL are individually controlled for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and lighting. After regular working hours, occupancy override, ventilation, and carbon dioxide monitoring meets ASHRAE guidelines
  • Our Class-100,000 clean rooms can achieve a particle count of less than 10,000. Each of the qualification facilities and high bays have independent HVAC controls with three-stage filtration. The HVAC system is capable of maintaining a year-round temperature of 22°C ±2° (72°F,±3°) plus a relative humidity of 40% (±5%) in winter and 45% (±5%) in summer.

Safety and security

  • Safety and protection of valuable spacecraft/hardware receive the highest priority at the DFL. The building is equipped with a state-of-the-art security and fire protection/fire detection systems. All access points are controlled and monitored. Located within the the CRC campus , whose premises are security-cleared with controlled access, the DFL ensures a high level of security for test activities
  • Office areas are equipped with sprinklers and positive fire protection and fire detection systems
  • Qualification facilities and clean rooms are provided with an addressable fire detection and/or controllable fire protection system
  • Both security and fire detection systems are monitored 24 hours per day by site security and by a remote monitoring system.

Building systems

  • Central heating (5,000 MBH), 400-tonne central cooling, and 1.5 MW central emergency power plants serve the entire DFL building
  • Each plant has adequate capacity and redundancy to ensure safe and continuous operation, year-round and with minimum maintenance down-time.
