In April of 2007, eight Canadian youths under the age of 30 were selected to represent Canada in Geneva, Switzerland at the first ever World Youth Assembly for Road Safety during the United Nations’ Global Road Safety Week. It was out of the enormous enthusiasm and momentum brought from the World Youth Assembly and the following Canadian Youth Road Safety Conference that the Canadian Road Safety Youth Committee was formed. The opportunity to collaborate with young Canadians combined with the international recognition of road safety as a major health issue has put pressure on the global community to end road traffic tragedies. Recognizing the need for continued action on youth-related road safety issues here in Canada, the Canadian Road Safety Youth Committee aims to represent young people and youth-centred road safety initiatives across Canada. Future plans for the committee include continuing to promote the Youth Declaration for Road Safety adopted in Geneva, serving as a central organizing body to provide information for youths involved in road safety across Canada, as well as expanding the executive committee to include sub-committees representing all provinces and territories.
