- Growers of malting barley in all parts of Western Canada will have access to the CWB's protein premium program during the coming crop year thanks to a total of 21 companies signing on as participants for 2007-08. The program rewards farmers who produce the lower-protein barley that the malting industry requires. Premiums range from $1 for protein levels of 12.5 per cent to $5 for 11 per cent and under. For more information, visit http://www.cwb.ca/public/en/farmers/payments/malting/.
- The minimum protein level for Canada Western Red Winter (CWRW) Select wheat in the 2007-08 Identity Preserved Contract Program (IPCP) has been reduced to 11 per cent from 11.5 per cent. Recent analysis indicates that end-use quality can be preserved at this level. The change is being made to boost the quantities of CWRW Select potentially available to customers through the IPCP. - Submissions and intervener applications related to a major level-of-service case launched against CN Rail are expected to be filed with the Canadian Transportation Agency by the end of day tomorrow (April 10). The CWB has filed to intervene in the case, arguing that CN has introduced serious systemic issues that disadvantage farmers. The case is attracting a high level of support from farm groups and grain industry players across the Prairies. For more information, visit http://www.cwb.ca/public/en/hot/rail/ .
