Transport Canada works to promote the safe transportation of railway goods and passengers by administering the Railway Safety Act. The department oversees all rail safety regulatory functions, including regional strategic and operational planning.

The Rail Safety unit monitors the railway industry for compliance with standards, rules and regulations by conducting inspections and audits of railway operations, equipment, infrastructure and railway crossings. Transport Canada liaises and consults with industry, provinces, municipalities and other government departments to promote railway safety and the safe transportation of dangerous goods.
