The primary focus of the Security and Emergency Preparedness branch is to protect the national transportation system against acts of unlawful interference and to respond to emergencies affecting the national transportation system.

The Security and Emergency Preparedness branch ensures that the movement of the traveling public via the national transportation system is conducted in a secure manner. Security and Emergency Preparedness Inspectors, who are federal enforcement officers, promote security compliance with security regulations under the Aeronautic Act, Marine Transportation Security Act, and the Rail Safety Act through awareness, inspection and enforcement.

Emergency Preparedness is another key responsibility of the Security and Emergency Preparedness branch. It provides a regional departmental capability to respond to industry, regional and national emergencies affecting the transportation system.

Security and Emergency Preparedness provides services such as:

  • Transportation security advice to internal groups, other federal departments, other levels of government, non-governmental organizations and industry stakeholders
  • Security clearances for transporters of explosives to the United States
  • Employee security clearances
  • Inspections of air carriers, airports, vessels, port facilities, rail operations and facilities to verify if they comply with security requirements
  • Maintenance of the departmental Regional Situation Centre in a state of readiness for effective incident management and communications in the event of an emergency
