The Surface branch promotes and regulates a high level of safety in rail transportation and in the transportation of dangerous goods by road or rail.

The Atlantic Region’s Rail Safety unit oversees all rail safety regulatory functions, including strategic and operational planning to administer regionally the Railway Safety Act.

The Surface branch is responsible for the strategic planning and operational management of the transportation of dangerous goods (TDG) as defined by the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act. The branch liaises and consults with the industry, provinces, municipalities and other government departments to promote TDG safety.

Core activities include:

  • Railway industry inspections and audits to ensure compliance with standards, rules and regulations under the Railway Safety Act and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act.
  • Liaisons and consultations with industry, provinces, municipalities and other government departments to promote railway safety and the safe transportation of dangerous goods.
