Note: The reported occurrences cover only the federal jurisdiction. Canada's rail network was restructured in the mid-1990s. In 2004, the provincial railways continued to account for a small portion of the total national rail network (12.5 per cent, with 41 companies under provincial jurisdiction), while federal railways accounted for most of the network (87.5 per cent, with 38 companies regulated federally). Figures are preliminary as of January 11, 2005. Final figures over preliminary and estimated figures historically have changed less than one per cent. Fatalities and serious injuries involved in incidents are not included in the Fatality and Serious Injury totals. For accident and reportable incident definitions, see Transportation Safety Board Regulation Web site: http://www.tsb.gc.ca.

1 Million train-miles include main track miles and yard switching miles.

Numbers are estimated for 2004.

2 PTM = Passenger Train-miles; estimated for 2004.
