$3.4 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING ANNOUNCED FOR BRITISH COLUMBIA HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS

may 2007

A total of 12 small craft harbours in British Columbia will benefit from $3.4 million in new federal funding this year to undertake upgrades, reconstruction, and repair projects.

Details of these projects, broken down by harbour in their respective geographic areas, are:

North Coast Area:

The Fairview Harbour facility in Prince Rupert will benefit from the continuing phases of two ongoing projects at that site – the upgrade of the mooring system for the floating breakwater and repairs to the timber floats. The reconstruction of the floats will greatly increase the long-term life of the structures and maintain a high level of service to fishers and clients of that facility.

The Port Edward Harbour facility near Prince Rupert will benefit from a service-area repair project that will see the re-surfacing of the existing fill area and portions of the adjacent upland.

At the Port Simpson Harbour, past inspections of the wharf approach at the facility identified a number of deteriorated structural elements that are in need of immediate repair. Repairs will be undertaken to ensure continued access to the wharf and floats at the site.

Vancouver Island:

The Discovery Harbour facility in Campbell River will benefit from the repair and reconstruction of the floats dedicated to large scale seine boats. These repairs will include an upgrade to the mooring piles and reconstruction of portions of the structural timbers that make up the floats.

The Comox Harbour facility will benefit from an electrical repair project that will address safety and maintenance concerns to ensure an adequate electrical supply for vessels that moor at the harbour.

At the Campbell River Harbour facility, a float repair project will involve the repair and reconstruction of the timber floats in the north basin of the site.

The French Creek Harbour facility will benefit from two projects. Phase II of a wharf reconstruction project will continue and allow for the completion of a concrete abutment, the design and installation of a mooring system to secure the structure, and the fabrication and installation of a steel ramp. Once completed, the work will provide a safe, low maintenance concrete wharf structure that will play a key role in vessel loading and unloading operations at the harbour. The second project will involve a refit and upgrade to the fire protection system at that site. Work will include the replacement of dry lines and scheduled maintenance on stand pipes and other components.

At Port Hardy Harbour, two projects will be undertaken. The final phase of a multi-year project to replace and upgrade the floating wharves at the seine float facility will be implemented. The completion of the project will include the delivery and installation of a newly fabricated concrete breakwater float. Secondly, a harbour basin dredging project will be carried out to increase basin depth. Upon completion of the dredging project, the District of Port Hardy will be in a position to move forward with long-term float reconfiguration plans and continue ongoing operational maintenance activities to ensure the long-term viability of the facility.

The Cowichan Bay Harbour facility will undergo repairs to its wharf and approach. Work will include repairs to bearing piles, stringers and the concrete wharf deck.

South Coast Area:

The Saltery Bay Harbour facility will benefit from the reconstruction of many of its floats, which will include the replacement of deck planks, bull rails and mooring lines. Work will also be undertaken to upgrade the harbour gangway and office facility.

The Okeover Harbour facility will benefit from the reconstruction of the boat launching ramp. The project will include repair and reconstruction of the ramp to ensure it is fully serviceable for commercial shellfish product loading/offloading and boat launching activities.

The Gilford Island Harbour facility will see repairs to the timber approach and wharf head. The project will address safety concerns at the harbour and ensure access for harbour users.
