Guided Search allows you to navigate through the resources in a CHN Group/Topic
page, and narrow your search by pre-set options.
Choose this approach when:
- you want to browse our site and get a broad overview of the types of
information that the CHN has to offer
- you're interested in a particular broad topic or group
- you're less comfortable with our more advanced search features.
How to do Guided Searching
Each CHN Group/Topic page has a
link you can click to start a Guided Search in that page.
- From the CHN Home Page, pick a Group/Topic page that interests you.
The Group/Topic page will appear on your screen. Now, click the link to Guided
Search.
A new page will appear on your screen showing you:
- how many resources CHN currently has in that Group/Topic page (for example,
"Items found: 200")
- the first 10 items, in alphabetical order, and a link to view the next 10
- on the right hand side, your options for narrowing down your search.
You can now start browsing through all of the documents. The resource titles
are hyperlinked to their locations on the web sites of CHN's partner organizations.
When you click the title, a new browser window opens to display the resource
on that site. The CHN site stays open in the first window, so you can easily
return to it.
If the number of documents is too large for you to scroll through, or if you
have a more specific interest, you can narrow your search results by selecting
a further search term from the navigation bar in the right-hand column of your
screen. For example, if you are searching for resources on Children, you can
pick another term such as Healthy Eating to give you only results on Children
AND Healthy Eating. You will note that only valid choices (choices for which
the CHN has documents) will be available for your selection.
Options for you to use to narrow your search appear in the right-hand column
of your screen:
Topic |
This option allows you to narrow your search by CHN Topic, for example
Seniors AND Active Living. |
Group |
This option allows you to narrow your search by CHN Group, for example
Heart Health AND Women. |
Resource Type |
The CHN allows you to specify a particular kind of resource:
- Healthy Living Info: These resources provide health information
such as FAQs, injury/disease prevention tips, caregiver guidelines, warning
signs, consumer help-lines, interactive quizzes, and databases. May also
include descriptions of programs and services, event calendars, publication
lists.
- Organizations: These resources link you to home pages
of the CHN Partner Organizations and their subsidiaries.
- Health Promotion Tools: These resources support the "business" and
strategies of health promotion by community organizers and a broad range
of health professionals.
- Policy & Research: These resources
provide policy statements, policy papers, studies or the results of research.

Province/Territory |
Limits search results to resources that contain information specific
to a particular province or territory. Please note that if you choose
one of these options, resources that apply to all of Canada will not be
listed, only those that apply specifically to the province or territory
you select. |
When you click on one of the options in the right-hand column, a new set of
search results is displayed, matching the Group/Topic page you are currently
in with the option you chose. The number of results returned is displayed at
the top of the list. You can explore these search results, or use the options
still remaining in the right-hand column to further narrow down your search,
or click the Back button to return to a previous set of search results.
