Web Services Sub-Group - Deliverables Task Forces
1. Government of Canada Web Services Inventory.
Lead: Jean Bernatchez
Support: Luc Leblanc, Elsa Van Hulst; Cecil Somerton, Tom Kralidis
Objectives:
Produce a definition of web services within the context of the Government of
Canada and the Information Management Registry Project. The definition will
provide a point of reference for establishing a common understanding of what
constitutes a web service and will enable us to gain a better understanding as to
the type of objects that should be referenced in a GOC Web Services Registry.
Define some preliminary high-level classifications for GOC web services. Examples
of possible classifications may relate to business functions, technological
standards and platforms used to implement web service, etc.
Approach:
A Request for Input letter will be posted on the MDWG Listserv, the Web
Services Sub Group Listserv, the Internet Advisory Listserv and the CMS site. The
Request for Input will invite government employees to share information concerning
any web service, or any "web service kind of thing", developed and used
within the Government of Canada. The Request will make explicit that there is no
right definition for a web service that the main purpose is to help us come up
with an appropriate and useful definition of web services within the Government of
Canada. The kind of information we expect to obtain includes the organization
creator name, what it is used for in simple business terms, who uses it, is it
used only internally to the organization or is it shared, whether there might be
potential for reuse or not, what technical platforms, standards are used, etc.
Responses will be compiled and analyzed. During analysis, groups of objects will
be identified alongside with rationales as to how they would advance the GOC by
being available for discovery in a GOC Registry. From here a definition of Web
Services within the context of GOC can be derived. During analysis, it is also
expected that patterns will emerge to suggest what types of classifications are
required to organize GOC web services within a Registry and possible Use Cases
that a GOG Registry would support.
2. Environmental scan and trends analysis of Web Services Standards and
implementations on a global level.
Lead: Luc Leblanc,
Support: Elsa Van Hulst, Jim Lobban; George Sugar
Objectives:
Produce an environmental scan and trends watch summary report with bibliography
for a set of key topics relating to web services implementation, management,
discovery and reuse:
- Topics might include (need some input here...):
- Registry/Repository standards (ebRIM, ISO 11179)
- Major industry implementations
- Namespaces, identity management, persistence, security, ...
- ...
Approach:
We will appoint at least one expert for each topic, who will be responsible for
providing key resources, search leads, and a short summary of the key issues
relative to the topic from his particular point of view. We will then appoint
another person to do a literature search and review on the topic and to
consolidate findings into a summary report with detailed bibliography.
