Executive Summary,

Note

Write your Report in plain language. If you use too many technical terms you may raise more questions than answers. If you have to use technical terms because of the nature of your program or service, be very conscientious in adding complete definitions so that they can be understood by the 'layperson'. Consider adding a glossary to the Report.

  • The objective of the Summary is to provide a high level synopsis of the key information in the Report. Treat it like a 'snapshot' of the whole Report.
  • Someone should be able to read your Executive Summary and have an overall understanding of the PIA.
  • Consider including, at a minimum, the following points:
    • A description of what is being studied.
    • A description of the personal information involved with the program or service initiative.
    • A listing and description of each privacy risks.
  • Your Summary can also be structured using the main headings from the Table of Contents. Under each heading, present the key information.
  • When completed, the Executive Summary may be an appropriate document to communicate the PIA results to the public.

Note

Write your Executive Summary once you've completed all the other sections of the Report.

Note

Draft out your Summary in point form first.

Note

Review the full Report to determine that you've covered all the important points.

Note

Re-write your points in paragraph format.

Note

Have someone review your Summary and ask them to describe the PIA to you. If they can do that, you've written a great Summary!

Note

Ask for their feedback and incorporate it into your Summary.
