Statement by the Minister of National Defence for Remembrance Day

OTTAWA - The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, issued the following statement today for Remembrance Day:
“It is a great privilege for me to mark this Remembrance Day as the Minister of National Defence. It is an honour to be associated with the Canadian Forces, its history and traditions.
As Canadians, we take pride in our long and renowned military history. At home and abroad, our forces have a long-standing tradition of assisting in times of crises and contributing to international peace and security. Whether it’s our navy, sailing with allies to help ensure the safety of vital sea lines; our air force, patrolling the skies of North America; or our army, working in places like Haiti; all are working towards building a better world.
Our engagement in Afghanistan in the United Nations-mandated NATO mission follows in this proud tradition. We’re in Afghanistan to help Afghans rebuild their country. Our efforts are improving the lives of millions of Afghans who have suffered from decades of war and we are ensuring that Afghanistan never again becomes a haven for terrorism.
Today, Canadians across the country join with veterans to remember those who have defended the rights and freedoms that we enjoy today. We remember the great sacrifices our service men and women have made and honour those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Lest we forget.”
