Subject
Ministerial exemption for ATC 810 and AST 300 flight training devices (FTDs).
Purpose
Notify all flight training unit operators of the ministerial exemption permitting the operation of
ATC 810 and AST 300 FTDs.
Reference
- Canadian Aviation Regulation 606.03 Synthetic Flight Training Equipment
- Aeroplane and Rotorcraft Simulator Manual TP 9685E
Background
Flight time training credits on qualified FTDs are available for VFR flight, basic instrument flight and
instrument flight rules (IFR) procedures. Retesting of radio navigation and emergency procedures is permitted
on certain FTDs for recreational, private and commercial pilot - aeroplane flight tests.
In order to qualify for credits and provide the best possible quality of flight training, FTDs must operate
and be maintained according to strict standards.
The ATC 810 and AST 300 FTDs do not fully meet CAR 606.03(2), which states: “The Minister
shall, where it is determined that the synthetic flight training equipment meets the standards
set out for that equipment in the Aeroplane and Rotorcraft Simulator Manual, issue
to the operator of that equipment a flight simulator certificate or flight training device certificate.”
On July 28, 2005, a ministerial exemption was issued for all operators using ATC 810 and
AST 300 FTDs.
See Exemption in Appendix A.

General Aviation Advisory Circulars (GAAC) are intended to provide information
and guidance regarding General Aviation matters. A GAAC may describe an acceptable, but not the only, means
of demonstrating compliance with existing regulations. GAACs in and of themselves do not change, create any
additional, authorize changes in, or permit deviations from regulatory requirements. |
