TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE
CN and CPR now account for less
than two thirds of the Canadian rail network.
Canada's road network is over 1.4 million kilometres in length.
Canada Port Authorities account for 54 per cent of total port
traffic handled,
while 30 airports look after more than 94 per cent of air passenger
traffic.
Traffic on the St. Lawrence Seaway was down in 2000.
Transportation infrastructure is vital to the country's economy.
It allows people and goods to move across the country as well
as to other countries. Transportation infrastructure is made up
of a network of roads, railways, airports, ports and waterways
that stretch from coast to coast and to the Far North.
This chapter gives an overview of events and issues relating
to Canada's transportation infrastructure. It presents the most
current status of its elements and also addresses some essential
incidental services.
