Canada's food watchdog is warning consumers certain bottles of Metromint Flavor Water, distributed across the country, may be contaminated with a micro-organism that can cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Thursday certain bottles of Metromint Spearmint Water and Metromint Peppermint water are tainted with bacillus cereus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has also announced a countrywide recall of the products.
The recall applies to 500 millilitre bottles with a best-before date of Dec. 21, 2008, and a black M stamped on the front and the letter KSA printed on the back of the bottle.
The federal agency warns that foods tainted with bacillus cereus may not look or smell spoiled. Consumers may experience side-effects anywhere from 30 minutes to 15 hours after consuming the tainted product. Infants, children and pregnant women should be especially cautious as they are at risk of becoming dehydrated from diarrhea.
No associated illnesses have been reported in Canada or the U.S.
