This document is part of the Foundation section of the FMI.  It provides a government-wide view of management of information governance, accountability, and responsibility. It is complemented by the Governance and Accountability in Government Institutions Guideline, which provides guidance for the governance of information by government institutions.


Central Agencies with a Mandate for Information Management
Library and Archives Canada
The mandate of Library and Archives Canada is to preserve the documentary heritage of Canada for the benefit of present and future generations; to be a source of enduring knowledge accessible to all, contributing to the cultural, social and economic advancement of Canada; to facilitate in Canada cooperation among communities involved in the acquisition, preservation and diffusion of knowledge; and to serve as the continuing memory of the government of Canada and its institutions.

Speech from the Throne
September 30, 2002
The proposed legislation is to create an innovative knowledge institution, which combines the National Library of Canada and the National Archives of Canada, with a broader mandate to provide Canadians with easy and integrated access to their documentary heritage and knowledge about Canadian society.

Treasury Board Secretariat
The Secretariat recommends and provides advice to the Treasury Board on policies, directives, regulations, and program expenditure proposals with respect to the management of the government's financial, human, and material resources.

GOL Metadata Working Group (GOL MWG)
The GOL MWG advises Treasury Board Secretariat on metadata issues and develops guidance for federal departments and agencies. Sub-groups study various metadata-related subjects, such as search engines, tools, thesauri, e-learning metadata, and training. Membership includes representatives from over 28 departments.
Information Management Champions Committee (IMCC)
This senior-level Committee of Champions provides leadership and guidance to initiatives by the Organizational Readiness Office to support, develop and engage the IM Community in addressing human-resource-management issues related to service transformation.


Information Management Forum
The purpose of the Forum is to allow participants to share their experiences and to serve as a mechanism for the resolution of information management issues identified at the government-wide level.
