Justice Information System (JUSTIN)
Ministry of Attorney General
Justice agencies increasingly recognize the importance of integrating their information systems in order to share critical data, documents, images and key transactions. Integrated systems have the potential to improve the quality of information, and therefore the quality of decisions, by eliminating error-prone, redundant data entry.  In addition, through the sharing of data between systems, integration enables the sharing of crucial information without regard to time or space. JUSTIN provides a single integrated database comprising almost every aspect of a criminal case.

E-Filing Project 
Electronic filing has the potential to enable more efficient and effective communication, storage, retrieval and dissemination of the information involved in court matters. Over time, common standards will allow E-Filing to provide real benefits to all participants in legal proceedings. In keeping with the philosophy of "Government-on-Line", the Registry of the Federal Court of Canada has secured recognition of a special project from the Chief Information Officer's Branch of Treasury Board Secretariat as a "pathfinder project", because of its potential to demonstrate the value of common standards to all federal judicial bodies.

Government of Canada Symposium: Achieving Excellence in Information Management 
On February 13, 2003, Ian Wilson and Margaret Purdy, the Information Management (IM) Champions for the Government of Canada hosted the Government of Canada Symposium: Achieving Excellence in Information Management at the Ottawa Congress Centre. Participants heard from government leaders of Canada and the United States about what is being done to address the IM deficit, the IM tools and training currently available and what more needs to be done. In addition, awards were presented to departments that are "leading by example" in the IM field, by implementing new IM initiatives and sharing the results with their colleagues in other government departments.

Information Management (IM) Capacity Check Tool
The IM Capacity Check Tool (formerly known as the IM Maturity Model Tool) is a self-assessment tool intended as a diagnostic tool for senior management of an organization. An assessment using the IM Capacity Check can help institutions assess the state of IM practices within each entity against a common standard, bring together all the elements of information management practices, compare against best practices, and provide information to enable management to develop plans for improvements to their own IM practices.

Records and Information Life Cycle Management Guide
IM is an evolving science that is a key underpinning of effective information sharing within institutions, and externally to customers and suppliers, partners, or the public. As part of an ongoing, government-wide initiative, the Library and Archives of Canada has collected a number of resources to provide a foundation for building your own IM resources and competencies. Together with the IM community, we will be adding to the number and quality of resources found in this online Guide as time goes on.

The Organizational Readiness Office is undertaking demographic and other research to help identify needs within the community of practice. The research will also provide a basis for the community leadership to recommend programs and initiatives to help managers anticipate change as well as prepare their workforce to continue providing the high quality of service in information management.

Enhanced Management Framework (EMF) and KPMG Consulting LP
The EMF for IM/IT Division promotes the use of best practices, tools and methodologies to improve and enhance the management of IM/IT investments government-wide. EMF has entered into an arrangement with KPMG Consulting LP to provide the e-Government Capacity Check on the EMF web-site for use by Federal Government Departments, Agencies or other parties working on their behalf.

Information, Privacy and Security Policy Division
Managing information-based resources is now widely recognized in industry and government to be as critical as managing financial and human resources. This has led to the acceptance of information management, namely, the coordinated management of an organization's information-based resources, including its information holdings and investments in technology. It implies planning, directing and controlling all of the organization's information-based resources to meet corporate goals and to deliver programs and services.

Public Key Infrastructure
A Public Key Infrastructure Information Management working group was created in 2001 to look at similar issues for the new on-line environment. Representatives from seven departments developed a management guidance document to help departments manage information that is received or created using digital signatures and encryption. Managers take a series of steps to determine the best ways to manage and store electronic information, including PKI-supported transactions.

Information Management (IM) Checklist
Project plans should describe how Information Management requirements will be taken into consideration in the project and include an activity to address those Information Management elements that are relevant to the project. In addition to legislation and policies relevant to information management, the document identifies several underlying principles to be taken into consideration when preparing an IM project.

It specifically addresses those instances where the information was received in an encrypted state or digitally signed.

Policy on the Management of Government Information
Effective Date: May 1, 2003
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that information under the control of the Government of Canada is managed effectively and efficiently throughout its life cycle. Federal government institutions must manage information in a privacy protective manner that supports informed policy and decision-making and the delivery of high quality programs, services, and information through a variety of channels and in both official languages. It replaces the Treasury Board Management of Government Information Holdings policy.

Public Records Office - Electronic Records
The U.K. government has set a target for all central government organisations to be able to store and retrieve their public records electronically by 2004, to ensure that they are able to meet the demands of working in an electronic environment. The Public Records Office oversees achievement of this target.

The Digital Library Federation (DLF) is a consortium of research libraries that are transforming themselves and their institutional roles by exploiting network and digital technologies.

National Archives and Records Administration Strategic Plan
The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is the grant-making affiliate of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). NARA protects U.S. federal records of historical value. NHPRC helps non-federal institutions preserve and make broadly accessible other records of historical value through grants to archival institutions, manuscript repositories, and publications in multiple formats.
