Transport Canada Marine Safety Inspectors designated as inspectors under the Canada Shipping Act, Transport of Dangerous Goods Act, and the Safe Containers Convention Act, carry out inspections relevant to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) codes, guidelines and standards. A formal inspection regime is in place in Halifax at the main container terminal to monitor compliance with the International Marine Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code and the Safe Containers Convention Act.

The TDG Directorate serves as the major source of regulatory development, information and guidance on dangerous goods transport for the public, industry and government employees.

CANUTEC is the Canadian Transport Emergency Centre operated by Transport Canada to assist emergency response personnel in handling dangerous goods emergencies.
