This interprovincial link spans the Ottawa River 5 km (3.10 mi.) west of Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The bridge was named after Samuel de Champlain as its site is adjacent to the ancient portage used by the explorer. The bridge is the most westerly of the five interprovincial bridges in the National Capital Region linking Hull/Aylmer to Ottawa between Highway #148 and the Ottawa River Parkway. |
Description: |
The bridge superstructure consists of a low level steel plate girder, trestle spans and island fill sections. There are 34 x 21.3 m (68.90 ft.) steel girder spans and 4 x 38.1 m (125 ft.) steel girder spans in the deep water. The deck consists of 100 mm to 125 mm (3.93 in. to 4.92 in.) lightweight concrete deck on light guage galvanized steel decking.Three islands in the river are used to support bridge spans with retained fill sections, trestle spans and miscellaneous concrete chambers and archways. The crossing is 1,142 m (3,746 ft.) long and 12.2 m (40 ft.) wide consisting of two vehicular traffic lanes and two sidewalks. The bridge accomodates mainly non-commercial traffic and light weight transit buses. |

Average annual daily traffic as per 1997 statistics is 25,100 motorized vehicles in both directions. Peak hour volumes are 1,920 vehicles in the morning peak with 1,380 vehicles per hour of that in the southbound direction. In the afternoon peak, 2,110 vehicles per hour with 1,500 vehicles per hour travelling in the northbound direction. |
