Champlain Bridge Ice Control Structure (Estacade)

Type:

- has both steel girder spans and prestressed
  girder spans which are supported by a total
  of 72 concrete piers and 2 abutments
  resting on rock

Location:

The Estacade runs parallel to the Champlain Bridge about 300 m (984.25 ft.) upstream of the bridge.  It extends west-east between Nun's Island and the St. Lawrence Seaway dike.

Description:

The length of the Estacade is about 2 km (6.56 mi.) with a deck width of 8.5 m
(27.88 pi.).

History:

The Estacade was built between 1964 and 1965.

Restrictions:

A bicycle path was built on the Estacade to connect existing bicycle paths on Nun's Island and the South Shore.
