Description: |
The tunnel is 227.6 m (746.6 pi.) long. It consists of 2 concrete tubes carrying 2 lanes of traffic inside.
The tunnel comprises of 18 concrete caissons. There is 1 lane of traffic in each direction and a sidewalk on the north side. Three ventilation shafts (1 air outlet and 2 air intake shafts) ventilate the tunnel. The 2 traffic lanes are separated by a central support structure forming the first ventilation shaft (air outlet). The second ventilation shaft (air intake) is located on the south side of the caissons, while the third is on the north side under the sidewalk. |
History: |
Construction of the tunnel began in 1956 and was completed in 1957. It was built by The St. Lawrence Seaway Authority at the time of construction of the shipping locks. |
Restrictions: |
Special measures apply to the passage of vehicles carrying dangerous materials. The tunnel is posted with a 4.2 m (13.78 ft.) clearance. |
