It is located in the southern part of the city of Welland, Ontario on Highway 58A and crosses the Welland Canal under the Bypass section between locks seven and eight. |
Description: |
The tunnel is 330 m (1,082.67 ft.) long, 35 m (114.83 ft.) wide and 10 m (32.80 ft.) high. It consists of two traffic lanes and two (originally three) railway lines. The tunnel was built of reinforced concrete and includes extensive approaches, drainage and two railway bridges crossing the east and west approaches to the tunnel. |
History: |
The tunnel was built in the 1960's and was opened to vehicular traffic in 1972 and to rail traffic in 1973. It was built by the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority at the time of construction of the City of Welland Bypass Project.
