Valleyfield Bridge

Location:

The Valleyfield Bridge is located south of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield and crosses the Beauharnois Canal (Highway 132).
Description: This work has two superstructures, one which (downstream), belonging to Transport Canada , carries road traffic while the other (upstream side), belonging to Conrail (CSX), carries railway traffic.  The piers belong to Hydro Quebec.  A lift span accommodates ship traffic.  The bridge is approximately 950 m (3,116.79 ft.) long, consisting of 30 fixed spans and a vertical lift span on 31 concrete piers.  The bridge has two vehicular traffic lanes of 4.2 m (13.77 ft.) each and a single railway track.

History:

The fixed span was built in 1932 and the lift span was built in 1958.  The fixed span was built by the Beauharnois Light, Heat and Power Company with the power canal and the lift span was built by the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority at the time of construction of shipping locks.  Major rehabilitation was completed in 1993.
