Description: |
The straightway bridge is 2,011.68 m (6,600 ft.) long and carries two tracks. On the outside of the trusses, one 4.87 m (15.98 ft.) roadway lane per side is connected. A railway diversion, extending 1,066.8 m (3,500 ft.), ensures continuous rail, marine and road traffic during the passage of vessels in the St. Lawrence Seaway locks. |
History: |
Built in 1853 by the Grand Trunk Railway Company, the original Victoria Bridge was a single track structure. It was later modified in 1899 to carry two tracks and allow for road traffic with tolls. The existing spans are supported on the original masonry piers, built in the 1850's.
A major rehabilitation program for the rail portion of
the structure was carried out in the years 1995-1997. The highway portion of the bridge also underwent major repairs during the 1998-2000 period.

Tolls were eliminated in 1962. |

In 1995, an average of 35,000 vehicles crossed the bridge each day. |
