Transport Canada is committed to making sustainable development a fundamental principle of policy development, transportation safety regulations and program delivery, and strives to conduct all of its operations in an environmentally responsible manner.

To attain this goal, Transport Canada has implemented a regional Environmental Management System (EMS) that seeks to integrate environmental considerations into daily regional departmental planning and decision-making. The regional EMS is integrated with Transport Canada's National EMS and Sustainable Development Strategy.

The department also ensures that Transport Canada owned harbours and ports and airports are managed in an environmentally responsible manner. Site specific EMSs support those airports that Transport Canada still owns and operates. Environmental Emergency Contingency Plans are maintained for all Transport Canada airports and ports in the region.

The department monitors the environmental management of the airports that are part of the National Airport System.

In accordance with the Canadian Environment Assessment Act and with the support of the Canadian Environment Assessment Agency, the department conducts environmental assessments that are associated with its mandate.

Transport Canada is responsible for the management, remediation and reporting of several contaminated sites in the region. An internal database is maintained to aid in the management of these sites.

Transport Canada promotes regional initiatives that aim towards sustainable transportation systems and promotes environmental awareness within the department.
