Underneath Signal Hill, the unpredictable Atlantic Ocean turns into a narrow channel of water leading into a protected and peaceful harbour. Located near the fishing grounds on the Grand Banks, it's not surprising that inside those "narrows", a fishing port began 5 centuries ago. It still is a fishing port; handling more fish than any other place in the province.
Beginning in the 17th century, the West Country merchants recognized the value of the harbour as a place to do business. That early mercantile trade is responsible for turning St. John's into the commercial centre it is today.
Inside the Narrows is a story about St. John's harbour. It looks at where the harbour fits today as the centrepiece of the capital city of Nfld and Labrador, and it takes a peek into the harbour's colorful past.
