About Living Halifax

Meet our host Heidi Petracek and Living Halifax's regular columnists!

Host Heidi Petracek

Heidi Petracek

Broadcaster Heidi Petracek brings her infectious energy to Living Halifax every day as she meets the people who make the Maritimes so special. Her voice has been a familiar part of households throughout the East Coast as host of several CBC Radio programs, including Halifax's drive-home show, Mainstreet. On Living Halifax, Heidi uses her natural curiosity and try-anything attitude to introduce viewers to new and exciting ways to live better in the Maritimes.

When Heidi's not out in the field working on the show, she's listening to her favorite indie, world, jazz, and electronic music, or she's out in her sea kayak enjoying the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.

CBC Television lightens up daytime programming with Living Halifax - an entertaining and informative daily half-hour show that offers a fresh, hands-on approach to life in Halifax.

Green Facelift

Green Facelift

We all want to do our part to save the planet but where to begin? Well, why not start at home? Wednesdays on Living Halifax, actress and award-winning filmmaker Mary Lewis will take you on a tour through her home. Each week, she will perform a three-minute dissection of one room: researching, discovering, and presenting a gamut of choices we can all make for greener living, one room at a time. Mary encourages us all to use our dollars wisely and think green when shopping for everything from a loaf of bread to a new home, while reminding us just how far we have come by juxtaposing film clips from the “bigger is better” 50’s and 60’s with the present day setting of her own low-energy-footprint home.

Repair Affair

Repair Affair

Follow irreverent single mom Christine Lippa, as she attempts to “do it yourself” and finally take on all those household jobs that used to be her ex’s domain: and she does it ON HER OWN! Watch and learn as she tackles everything from leaky faucets to full-scale renovations, all with a smile on her face and a hammer on her hip. Repair Affair airs Mondays on Living Halifax.

Whether you’re figuring out how to share the chores or adapting to an empty nest, family life is never dull. Deborah Kimmett has tips on relating to your relations, with the unique combination of wit and wisdom she has honed in her long comedy career. Since her first show at the famous Second City Theatre in 1980, Deborah has regaled audiences with her tongue-in-cheek take on personal experiences she has either enjoyed or endured, but always learned from. She brings her wry humour to Living Halifax on Fridays.

Upload - Living Halifax and You!

We love to hear from our viewers and want you to send us your great story ideas for our show.

Right now we're scouring the e-mails that have been pouring in all summer. We love hearing what you think of the show and as always any ideas you have are welcome.

We've already visited the Dominoe Dotties in Summerside PEI who wrote Living Halifax to tell us about their chapter of the Red Hat Society. Heidi and the crew dropped in on the ladies as they were in the middle of a serious game of Mexican Train Dominoes and they were kind enough to show Heidi the ropes. You can catch that story in during the first week of our second season that kicks off of September 4th.

The Bosom Buddies, a dragon boat team made up of breast cancer survivors, also wrote us so we had to make our way to Lake Banook where the team trains.

So please keep sending us your great ideas about where Living Halifax should visit. Tell us about the outstanding person in your community that you want the Maritimes to hear about. Let us know why your town is the best of all, and show us the creative talents of either yourself or someone you know. All your ideas are invaluable to us and we can't wait to explore them this season!

Fill us in on what you think makes living in the Maritimes so special! Send us an email or write us at:
