Explaining "the birds and the bees" was never easy. But future generations may look back and say we had it easy.
Test-tube babies, surrogate mothers, sperm donors – these are just some of the new ways of making babies introduced in the last part of the 20th century. And the limits of our own biology will no doubt be tested further by future scientific feats such as human cloning, gene therapy and genetic manipulation... not to mention the knowledge that we'll gain from the Human Genome Project (the mapping of human DNA).
Some of the concepts aren't easy to grasp, and there's certainly no consensus on how we should proceed, which technologies we should allow and which ones we shouldn't. But political leaders, scientists and religious figures around the world are sure about one thing: that these new biotechnologies will affect what we value above all – life.
