Mayor Peter Kelly met with the founder of the New York-based Guardian Angels Friday but said it's too early to tell whether a chapter of the group will be set up in Halifax.
Kelly met with Curtis Sliwa, who founded the red jacket-clad citizens' patrol group about 30 years ago.
Curtis Sliwa, seen in this file photo, formed the Guardian Angels in 1979 while working as a night manager of a McDonald's restaurant in the Bronx.

Kelly said he and Sliwa discussed how the group was faring in Calgary, where it recently set up a chapter, but said it's too early to tell whether the Angels will come to Halifax.
"I don't have answers for you now," Kelly said.
"We're just fact-finding in terms of how they operate, how they get along with … the people in which they meet and see how the people in those communities feel there is or is not a need and see how it goes from there."
Sliwa was to meet with Police Chief Frank Beazley and visit local areas where violent crimes have occurred. He'll also meet with a citizens' group in the Halifax Commons Friday night and patrol pizza corner, the popular downtown intersection where clubbers gather after the bars close.
Sliwa said it will be up to local residents to create a chapter, do the training and go on patrols.
Kelly and Sliwa first discussed setting up a group in Halifax while the mayor was at a conference in New York in September.
