RCMP are blaming a cold night and a stuck car for the death of a man near Neepawa, Man.
A passing motorist spotted the man's car and his body in the snow Wednesday morning off an unplowed road near the village of Franklin, about 180 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
RCMP believe the 42-year-old man succumbed to hypothermia; temperatures reached –20 C in the area.
"Our indications are, at this point, that that gentlemen was stuck in the snow and made the decision to exit the vehicle and start walking," said RCMP Sgt. Line Karpish.
Alcohol may also have played a role, police said.
The man's body was found less than a kilometre away from his vehicle, a Chrysler Neon.
His name was not released.
Manitoba's Emergency Measures Organization recommends stranded motorists stay with their vehicles. With a window partially opened, the engine can be run sparingly for heat, after drivers check to ensure the exhaust pipe is not blocked with snow.
Motorists should carry a winter survival kit that includes a flashlight, candles, matches, blankets, a first-aid kit, shovel, snacks such as candy or granola bars, and flares or other signal aids, the EMO recommends.
