Autumn - A Time for Change
The summer weather's starting to cool down and harvest time is
approaching: why not visit your local farmers' market and try some of
the fresh seasonal fruits, vegetables and meats they have to offer.
In Atlantic Canada, 80% of organically produced food is sold
directly to the consumer by the farmer–visit our database to find a farmer
near you and help strengthen the link from farmer to table.
It's a season of change for organics in Canada: the federal government has been working with industry stakeholders to develop a national organic standard and regulation. ACORN is encouraged by the proposed
Organic Products Regulations, which were released to the public September 2, 2006. Stakeholders and consumers have 75 days to respond to the proposed Regulation. The new
organic standard is also now available.
Here at ACORN, September has brought more than cooler nights: Beth
McMahon, ACORN executive director has begun her maternity leave and
Matthew Holmes has come on board as the acting director for the next
number of months.
Take some time to explore the ACORN website: it has a lot to offer,
from featured
organic producers in the region to an unrivaled organic inputs,
pest and weed database.
