An 81-year-old Alzheimer's patient died from exposure on Monday night in Moncton after wandering away from Manoir Notre-Dame retirement home.
Codiac RCMP found Adeline Léger shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday not far from the manor.
"Our members responded and located Mrs. Léger in the snow on the other side of the embankment between the home and the church, unresponsive," said Cpl. Mike Gaudet.
Léger was pronounced dead in hospital, Gaudet said.
A second elderly woman also tried to walk away from the nursing home on Tuesday night, said home director Valmond Robichaud.
Notre-Dame previously had a $22,000 security system installed, Robichaud said. But the home was told by the fire marshal's office to deactivate it because it didn't conform to national building codes.
"[We told them] an accident could happen," Robichaud told Radio-Canada. "In nursing homes like Villa's Rest, on the other side of the road, they have a system, but everyone is bedridden. Here, they are standing. They walk."
