5-goal game nets Gaborik 1st star

Last Updated: Monday, December 24, 2007 | 2:49 PM ET

Minnesota Wild winger Marian Gaborik was named the NHL's first star of the week Monday after delivering the league's first five-goal game in more than a decade.

Atlanta Thrashers goalie Kari Lehtonen received the second star, while Nashville Predators centre Jason Arnott was the third star.

Gaborik led all NHL scorers last week with eight points (six goals, two assists). Six of those points came in Minnesota's 6-3 win over the New York Rangers last Thursday, when Gaborik became the first player since Detroit's Sergei Fedorov in 1996 to net five goals.

Fedorov accounted for all the Red Wings' scoring in a 5-4 overtime win over Washington on Boxing Day 1996. Before Gaborik, the last player to score five times in regulation was Mario Lemieux, who accomplished the feat in an 8-4 victory over St. Louis in March 1996.

Gaborik also recorded a goal in a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators last Tuesday and had an assist in a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. The 25-year-old Slovak has 18 goals and 34 points in 30 games this season.

Lehtonen went 4-0-0 last week with a 1.96 goals-against average and .935 save percentage. He recorded 32 saves in a 6-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning last Tuesday, made 28 saves in a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators last Thursday and stopped 37 of 39 shots and both shootout attempts in a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. He finished his week by making 18 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday.

Arnott had four goals and four assists in four games. He recorded one goal and one assist in a 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild last Tuesday, registered one assist in a 5-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks last Wednesday and recorded three goals, including the game-winner, and one assist in a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night.
