The Department of Seniors is the provincial government department responsible for coordinating the planning and development of policies, programs, and services for seniors and leading the implementation of the Strategy for Positive Aging in Nova Scotia.
It serves as a single entry point to the Government of Nova Scotia on aging issues, provides information on programs and services for seniors, and listens and responds to the concerns of seniors and others.
Legislation introduced in 1980 provided for the establishment of the Secretariat, which is a cabinet committee chaired by Nova Scotia Minister of Seniors. Other ministers of the Secretariat include the Minister of Health, Minister of Community Services, Minister of Education, Minister of Service Nova Scotia & Municipal Relations, Minister of Health Promotion and Protection, and Minister of Justice.
The Department office is staffed by a Chief Executive Officer, six permanent employees, and a number of other individuals who are involved in projects being led by the department.
