Kenton Vaughan

Producer/Director/Writer

Kenton Vaughan has worked in television since 1991 when he joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He completed stints in both radio and television news before moving to the CBC's current affairs department. There he worked as a researcher and associate producer with the programs Market Place and Venture. He has an impressive background in investigative journalism with both programs.

In 1997, Vaughan began his career as an independent filmmaker by producing, directing and writing the documentary Turning Away, the sad but unsentimental story of two young people growing older on the streets of Toronto. It was broadcast on the CBC documentary series Witness in January 1998. Turning Away was named the best social documentary at the 1998 Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival and won a Chris Statue at the Columbus International Film & Video Festival. It was screened at the Shanghai International Television Festival and broadcast in China, Taiwan and Belgium.

Vaughan returned to the CBC program Venture as a field producer for the 1998/99 television season and earned two Bronze Plaques at the Columbus Festival for his work.

Vaughan is currently directing and writing The Devil You Know for the National Film Board of Canada, a documentary following the past and current exploits of comic book icon, Hollywood movie maker, rock video director, toymaker and all round corporate rebel, Todd McFarlane. It is scheduled for release during fall, 2000.

He is also developing new documentary projects including an examination of the donut shop, Canada's most ubiquitous institution.

Vaughan originally hails from rural Saskatchewan. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master's degree in journalism from Carleton University. While at Carleton, he wrote a history of the documentary at the CBC.
