Strategic Policy, Planning and Analysis Directorate

The objective of the Strategic Policy, Planning and Analysis Directorate (SPPA) is to provide strategic policy and planning advice to senior management and regional offices of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) on key health related issues and initiatives.

SPPA is also involved in:

  • Coordination and integration of horizontal, cross-branch policy analysis;
  • Quantitative analysis;
  • Policy coordination; and
  • Intergovernmental relations.

Divisions

The following are the divisions within the SPPA directorate:


Health Information and Analysis

The Health Information and Analysis Division is a centre of excellence for health surveillance, information, analysis and evaluation within First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB).

The Division is accountable for:

  • The management and delivery of quantitative and qualitative information including data development, data analysis and research evidence;
  • Evaluation advice to support senior management strategic planning, policy development, program priority setting and decision making on health related investment; and
  • Guiding data development in directions which will support policy and planning analysis.

Policy Development

The Policy Development Division is responsible for analysis and policy formulation to prepare the First Nations and Inuit Health system to respond to key medium to long-term challenges. It works within Health Canada and with First Nations and Inuit communities to examine issues and propose approaches to address them.

The division also co-ordinates and supports international activities for the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) and, in conjunction with Branch regional offices, coordinates and represents Health Canada in Aboriginal self-government negotiations with other federal government departments and communities.

Strategic Policy and Planning

The Strategic Policy and Planning Division is responsible, within the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), for:

  • Developing strategic policy and planning;
  • Providing overarching tactical policy advice; and
  • Developing the agenda and priority management, which includes:
    • Partnerships with national First Nations and Inuit organizations; and
    • Coordination and integration across Health Canada and with other government departments.

The division portfolio includes:

  • Health care renewal;
  • Intergovernmental relations (First Nations, aboriginal organizations and Federal/Provincial/Territorial/international relations); and
  • Sustainability of the current First Nations and Inuit Health system.

The division also gives support to the Branch for strategic communications issues that may arise.
