RCMP are cautioning outdoor enthusiasts in British Columbia to check avalanche warnings before heading into the backcountry after two snowmobilers died on Christmas Eve.
The two men were part of a group of four who were snowmobiling at Spanish Lake, near 108 Mile House in B.C.'s Interior, when they were caught in an avalanche.
When rescuers arrived, they found one severely injured man in his 20s, who later died.
The body of the second man was found Tuesday, buried under nearly two metres of snow.
The men had been digging themselves out from a minor avalanche when they were unexpectedly hit by a bigger, stronger avalanche that buried the pair, officials said.
The Canadian Avalanche Centre had cautioned people at the start of the holidays to be careful because of weak snowpacks throughout the province.
