A convicted killer, said to have had a relationship with Karla Homolka while the two were behind bars, could be released from a Quebec prison early in 2008, according to a report.
The French-language television network TVA said Jean-Paul Gerbet, sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in prison in 1998, could be shipped to his native country of France.
Gerbet was convicted in the murder of his girlfriend, Cathy Caretta.
The report said Caretta's parents are upset and strongly oppose his release.
Gerbet and Homolka were incarcerated at the same time in the Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., penitentiary. Homolka was freed in July 2005.
Homolka served a 12-year manslaughter sentence for her part in the sex slayings of Ontario teens Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French in the early 1990s. Her sentence also took into account the death of her 15-year-old sister, Tammy.
Her then husband, Paul Bernardo, is serving a life sentence.
